Graduate Study: Program Structure

Our PhD program is focused on producing the next generation of scholars in linguistics, integrating a range of empirical domains and methodological approaches. The structure of the program is as follows:

First & Second Years:

Coursework in core areas and methodologies of linguistics. By the end of the second year, students submit a portfolio containing samples of work in the areas of syntax, phonology, and semantics or historical linguistics. Upon completion of the portfolio, an examination is given in student's chosen subfield.

Third Year:

Presentation of two substantial research papers of publishable quality in different areas of linguistics. Four advanced seminars are taken for credit in years three and four, to allow exploration of new research areas and, especially, for pushing current research interests in novel directions.

Fourth Year:

Dissertation prospectus is defended by the end of the seventh term. One vetted dissertation chapter (with full bibliography) is submitted by end of eight term

Fifth Year:

Completion of dissertation and oral defense.

A detailed description of the program and its requirements is available here. In addition, students are subject to university requirements for the PhD degree.
